Enclosure No.2.

SCHEDULE OF AMENDMENTS.

66

Amended General Order.

106 (a) Line 1.

The words, "in this Colony" have been omitted.

107 (1) Line 2.

After the word,"officers", the words, on sterling salaries attached to the permanent pensionable establishment" have been inserted.

Remarks.

This omission in conjunction with the amended General Order 110, will enable an Officer domiciled outside the Colony, who has dependants, to draw rent allowance large enough for him to maintain a home in the Colony for his dependants throughout his tour of duty, even if they are not in the Colony for the whole period. Formerly, such an officer, when his dependants were not in the Colony, had the double liability of a reduced rent allowance and the necessity of maintain- ing two homes. It was rarely possible for him to move to cheaper accommodation when his dependants were not in the Colony owing to the perpetual housing shortage which is now infinitely more acute.

This insertion makes it clear that quarters can only be allocated to officers on the permanent establishment.

108 (2)(ii) between the words "on" and the word "salaries", the word "sterling" has been inserted.

108 (2)(iii) Between the word "other" and the word" salaries" the word "sterling" has been inserted, and after the word "salaries" the words "attaching to posts on the permanent pensionable establishment where this reduced percentage is included in the terms of service" has been added.

This makes it clear that the reduced charge of 6% is only applicable in cases where this was specially included in the conditions of service. In time only two categories will remain, those eligible for free quarters and those liable to pay a rental of 12%.

108 The last paragraph has been deleted and the following substituted:

"Rent for quarters which an officer is required to occupy in connection with his work, at or near his working premises may be reduced by such propor- tion as the Government shall direct".

This substitution is intended to make the General Order more flexible.

109. Sub-paras. (2), (3) and (4) have been deleted entirely and the following substituted therefor :

(2) "For the purpose of assessing rent

allowance, the following maximum rents are prescribed:

Paragraph (2) (a) as amended greatly simpli- fies this General Order, which in the past has proved to be by no means clear. It provides for a general increase in rent allowances for officers recruited from overseas, of from $40 50. The scales provided in the original General Order were laid down in 1929 when rents were considerably
